Preparing Walls for Brick Slips: Backing Boards and Substrates

A wall is ready for brick slips when its supporting construction, surface condition and chosen fixing system have been checked together. A clean-looking finish or a grooved board alone does not confirm that the complete facing can be supported.

Identify what is supporting the finish

Record both the visible surface and the construction behind it: masonry, render, plaster, plasterboard, a framed lining or a named carrier-board system. Include existing coatings and how the lining is attached. A photograph of paint cannot tell an installer the condition or fixing arrangement of the layers underneath.

Give the proposed slip, adhesive, pointing and board information to the installer or system manufacturer. Ask them to confirm the allowable complete facing load and required support for your exact assembly. Avoid adopting a generic weight limit from a different board or assuming that plaster and unskimmed plasterboard are interchangeable substrates.

Check condition before covering the wall

Arrange an assessment of loose areas, cracks, movement, moisture staining and unevenness before selecting a preparation method. A new facing will conceal the evidence, so establish the cause of an unexplained defect first. Mark areas needing repair on the wall sketch and record who will complete them.

Check line and flatness against the chosen fixing system’s limits. Adhesive has a specified bed range; it is not an unrestricted substitute for correcting the underlying wall. Decide the repair or levelling approach before ordering material quantities, because it can change both the preparation cost and the final wall projection.

Follow the adhesive’s surface instructions

For the stocked UltraScape Slipbond, Instarmac’s technical sheet requires removal of loose material and contaminants including paint, grease and laitance. It also describes dampening the receiving substrate and removing surplus water. Those are instructions for that product, not a universal preparation recipe for every board or adhesive.

Ask the manufacturer to resolve the approach where the existing coating, surface or proposed primer is not covered by the instructions. Do not assume a coat of general-purpose primer makes an uncertain surface suitable. Record the specified products and sequence, including any required waiting periods, so the preparation and fitting stages use the same plan.

Ibstock’s application guidance likewise makes substrate preparation and the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions central to fixing. Different systems can require different receiving conditions; follow the confirmed assembly rather than combining isolated steps from unrelated guides.

Choose a board as part of a system

Plasterboard, cement-based carrier boards, insulation-backed systems and proprietary tracking panels serve different purposes. Ask what the proposed board supports, where it may be used, which slips and adhesive it accepts, and how its fixings connect to the structure. Include board joints, edges, penetrations and any required movement details in that enquiry.

The Trackwall board stocked on this site is listed as 1190mm wide × 1125mm high with 68mm grooves. Hormigón’s technical guide includes that board size. The grooves help define a layout, but they do not confirm suitability for every slip height, joint arrangement or wall.

Obtain the installation details for the actual Trackwall variant and project before choosing fixings or substituting components. A board’s individual material property does not establish the performance of the wall assembled around it. Keep that distinction when comparing products in the brick slips and accessories range.

Resolve exposure and junctions early

External work needs an agreed full-system design, including how water and movement are managed at edges and openings. Read the external-use guide before treating an outside wall as the same job as an internal dry feature wall.

For an appliance or fireplace location, confirm the full assembly with the appliance and system requirements; the fireplace guide distinguishes decorative surroundings from heat-exposed areas. Likewise, a bathroom surface treatment cannot replace the waterproofing required by a wet-area system.

Check the final build-up at sockets, frames, skirtings and adjacent materials before boarding. Arrange any necessary electrical assessment with a qualified electrician. The sizes and thickness guide helps record those dimensions without confusing source-brick size with slip depth.

Use a preparation handover checklist

  • The backing construction and its support are identified.
  • Defects and moisture concerns have been assessed and resolved as specified.
  • Unacceptable coatings and contamination have been dealt with.
  • Required repairs, levelling, board fixings and joints match the agreed system.
  • The adhesive, slip format and pointing material are confirmed together.
  • Edges, openings, movement details and finished wall depth are agreed.
  • The installer has the current product instructions and recorded preparation plan.

Keep this record with the measurements and quote. Once preparation is accepted, the installation guide explains the overall fitting sequence. For the wider decisions that lead to this stage, use the brick slips overview.

Preparation and ordering checklist

Use this checklist with the installer and product supplier. It records checks; it does not certify that a wall or fixing system is suitable.
