Brick & Slips Calculator
How the numbers work
Rules of thumb used by the calculator. Your builder or architect will confirm exact quantities.
How many bricks are in a square metre?
About 60 standard 65mm metric bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall with 10mm mortar joints, and about 120 for a double-skin (one-brick) wall. Taller 73mm and imperial bricks need fewer per square metre.
Why add wastage?
Cutting around openings and corners, and the odd broken brick, means you’ll use more than the wall area suggests. We recommend 10%. Running short mid-job can mean a different production batch, so it’s worth ordering enough at once.
How are corner slips worked out?
Corner slips are sold singly, one per course. Each course is a 65mm slip plus a 10mm joint, so 75mm, which gives about 13.3 corner slips per metre of corner height.
How much adhesive do brick slips need?
Allow roughly one 20kg bag of slip adhesive for every 2.5m². Coverage varies with the substrate and the adhesive, so check the product’s own guidance.
I'm matching an existing wall. What size are my bricks?
Measure one brick plus one joint. If four courses measure about 300mm, they’re 65mm metric bricks. Older houses often have imperial bricks, which are taller. Not sure? Use our free brick matching service.
